COURSE OVERVIEW

The broad purpose of the occupation is to plan, select and size, install, commission, service and maintain (including fault finding, diagnosis and repair) zero carbon central heating and hot water systems in buildings including dwellings and industrial and commercial premises. Zero carbon heat sources may include but are not limited to Ground and Air Source Heat Pumps and Solar Thermal Collectors. The occupation includes work on both new build and existing properties and typically involves the installation, service, fault finding and repair of zero carbon heating and hot water appliances, storage vessels, pipework, heat emitters and associated components and their mechanical and electrical control systems.

Course information.

On completion of this standard, apprentices will be able to progress onto the L4 (HNC) Site Supervision or L5 (HND) Construction Management and Building Service Engineering.

The potential to secure employment working in the green skills and building services sector of the construction Industry.

 ASSESMENT:

Skills, knowledge and behaviours are assessed by competencies being displayed in the workplace, observations, employer feedback, assessor progress reviews, evidence collating and the employer enabling the apprentice’s job role to fulfil the requirements of the Apprenticeship.

On programme assessment will include various coaching and mentoring assessment methods. These assessments are deigned to review the apprentice’s behaviour, knowledge and skills against set gateway criteria. In addition the apprentice, employer and college are required to maintain an off the job training log evidencing new skills and knowledge being learnt over the duration of the apprenticeship. The final grading of the apprenticeship will be carried out through an End Point Assessment.

The EPA for this standard has three distinct assessment methods that have been designed to be completed only once the apprentice has finished the on-programme learner journey and passed through the Gateway. These include a practical assessment with questions, an interview with an independent assessor and a multiple choice test. These will be conducted and graded by an independent EPAO.

Course Overview.

Apprenticeship standards are employer-led, meaning that employers can specify exactly what’s required from an apprentice in each specific role. They outline the skills, knowledge and behaviours required to carry out your job role which are delivered and carried out both in the workplace, through teaching & learning and independent learning.

All the skills, knowledge and behaviours must be met in full for you to achieve your Apprenticeship. Some standards involve additional qualifications. For this apprenticeship It will be a requirement that the newly developed Level 3 Plumbing and Domestic Heating Qualification is achieved prior to taking the end-point Assessment.

Plumbing and Domestic Heating Technicians plan, select, install, service, commission and maintain all aspects of plumbing and heating systems. Plumbing and domestic heating technicians can find themselves working inside or outside a property. Customer service skills and being tidy and respectful are important qualities as they can often find themselves working in customers’ homes as well as on building sites.
